Credit Union of the Berkshires was founded on May 17, 1939 during the Great Depression. During this time period, the country was experiencing a severe economic downturn and many families were suffering financial hardships and loss. A very small group of Pittsfield school employees recognized the importance of a cooperative effort (a Credit Union) to access credit. The Credit Union was established with $250 in assets and 23 members to meet the credit needs of fellow employees.
